I
absolutely love New Years! It's always twice as special for me because the
celebrations don’t stop—my birthday is the very next day! I’m always excited
to turn a new year with fresh goals and a renewed sense of purpose. For me, the
beginning of a new year is like opening the first page of a fresh notebook—full
of promise, potential, and endless possibilities. It’s a time to reflect,
recalibrate, and chart the course for the months ahead. But what excites me the
most is figuring out what my “word of the year” would be. I like to summarize
my year in just one word and then craft my goals around that word. This is
something my friends and I have been doing for many years and it has been a transformative
process in shaping my intentions and actions for years!
Last
year, my word was "Pivot." At the time, I had no idea just how
much that word would influence my journey. Without realizing it, I started
leaning into the idea of change—pivoting in my career, my personal growth, and
even my hobbies. (Crocheting, anyone? ;-) Choosing to embrace change instead of
fearing it opened doors I never imagined and reminded me of the joy and
creativity that come with trying something new. Looking back, I can see how
that single word subtly guided my choices and became a compass for my year.
My word for this year is “Trump’s Audacity”. Now, before you raise an eyebrow, let
me explain. When I say "Trump's
Audacity," I’m referring to the bold, unshakable confidence to pursue
goals without apology. This year, I want to shed every inhibition, step out of
my comfort zone, and fully embrace the courage to chase my dreams. I’m giving
myself permission to be daring, to ask for what I want, and to say
"yes" to opportunities that scare me (in the best way).
For
example, I’ve already made strides in launching and growing my Seek and Spark
brand. It’s scary putting myself out there, sharing my thoughts, and selling my
first products, but "Trump's
Audacity" is pushing me to take up space unapologetically. I’m showing
up as my fullest self—and inviting others to do the same.
Needless to say, words have power. Even
Science backs this up. Studies on intention-setting and the "priming
effect" show that when we focus on a specific word or idea, our brain
starts noticing opportunities and patterns related to it. It’s like when you
decide you want to buy a red car and suddenly you see red cars everywhere! A
Word of the Year can serve as your mental GPS, subtly guiding your decisions
and sharpening your focus.
The
Bible also emphasizes the importance of words and intention. Proverbs 18:21 reminds
us, "The tongue has the power of
life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit." By choosing
a word that aligns with your goals, you’re speaking life into your aspirations
and setting the tone for what you want to create. Here’s the catch though: it
is not enough to just have the word of the year; you have to speak it into existence!
Say it out loud many times until it becomes your reality.
So, how do you choose your word of the year? It is both an art and
a science. Here are some tips:
- Reflect on the
past year.
What worked? What didn’t? What lessons did you learn?
- Visualize your
ideal year.
What do you want to feel, accomplish, or experience?
- Brainstorm. Write down
words that resonate with you. Don’t overthink it; just let the ideas flow.
- Choose one that
lights or fires you up. When you find your word, you’ll
know. It will feel exciting and right!
Your
word can be anything—an action, a feeling, or even a phrase. The key is to pick
something that inspires and motivates you.
